Career guidance is an integral part of our school's educational provision.Our Career Guidance Counsellor, Bernie Slattery, aims to provide students with a range of services which will supply both the information and support necessary to make informed decisions about further education as well as job opportunites.


Guidance refers to a range of learning experiences that assist students to make choices (personal and social, educational and career) about their lives and to make transitions as a result of these choices.

The early years of second level education are critically important ones for young people.  The Guidance Counsellor is involved in helping students with:

  • psychometric testing
  • the transition from primary to second level
  • meeting Parents in first few weeks to ascertain any problems
  • the choice of Junior Cert subjects
  • the levels at which Junior Cycle subjects are taken
  • programme options after the Junior Cycle
  • meeting Parents re: programme options
  • exploring all options with individual students and their parents if the student is not progressing to the Senior Cycle
  • study skills and techniques
  • processing the Junior Certificate Examination results.

The Guidance Counsellor helps students with:

  • psychometric testing for all students applying for reasonable accommodations
  • subject choice seminar for Senior Cycle & meeting Parents
  • the levels at which Senior Cycle subjects are taken;
  • options around further education, training and employment, and career pathways;
  • applying to colleges of further and higher education;
  • classes with 6th Years to ensure understanding of all isssues regarding CAO
  • meeting Parents to explain and ensure understanding of CAO & UCAS system
  • utilising sources of useful information: websites, careers library, prospectus etc.;
  • acquiring first hand knowledge through college open days, guest speakers, career exhibitions, information evenings;
  • processing and using information from aptitude / interest / personality tests;
  • LCVP work experience / work shadowing;
  • CV prepartion;
  • interview skills and practice;
  • study skills and techniques;
  • applications to colleges for scholarships and access programmes; HEAR & DARE
  • processing the Leaving Certificate Examination results.
